Video- NYC skyline

This video reflects my overall design choices through my stairs, materiality and texture because New York City is known as the 'concrete jungle.'  This name conjures imagery of straight, harsh edges, an unnatural world. However with New York's straight edges and harsh overwhelming capability, there is beauty. With the busy streets, noises, smells creates this atmosphere. There is much more beneath the surface, for example 'The Highline' which is a raised garden, walkway built on top of an old, unused railway. This shows the city's relationship to natural landscape as well as the typical city textures.

Week 3 -Textures

I experimented with paper and light to try and make different textures

 Dynamic                   Exposed

 Carved             Vibrant

 Symmetrical             Expressive

 Strong             Artificial

 Opaque             Light/Dark

Contrast        Rigid

The Stair

1. Spiral

These are my drawings at the beginning of figuring out the design of this staircase, I am trying to experiment with direction, railing and line of the stairs section.

The left page is a section showing the direction the two staircases go when they cross over the others path. One spins around the inside and the other spins around the outside.
On the right page is a section of the stairs that are shown below, the irregular shapes move around and connect together to create this staircase.

These are my product of my first page design and messy sketches

2. Wave

First part of concept on bottom right

I took the inspiration of the stair that moves in the direction of a wave as it slopes up.
These are a few different sections on the design.

Sketch up model of stair in this style.

3. Rigid

This design is similar to the one above.
Rigid stair case, where the steps are placed in an irregular pattern, this making it look like rocks rather than neat stairs.
Each step is different sizes but all the same shape of a simple square block.
I think these stairs would be impossible to walk on, however they do have a sculptural effect

4. Skeleton

The top sketch (right page) are my beginning rough sketches of this idea.
The intention is to have low risers and long treads for an easy and slow ascend and descend.
My aim was to have tick frames of the same size step and then have them overlap each other to show geometric shapes, with the centers being clear, so can see the 'skeleton' of the stairs.
